How do you change the rotors on a Ford F250?

how do you change the front rotors on a Ford F250

I have removed the brakes, caliper, and locking hub cap. Is there any thing else that needs to be removed or is the rotor just supose to slide off at this point, in which case it does not.How do you change the rotors on a Ford F250?
This sounds like it's a four wheel drive. My Blazer works this way, so yours may be the same. If so, you have to remove the hubs. The rotor is held in place with the wheel studs. They are pressed into the rotor. But there is more to it than this. There is an inner and outer bearing as well as retainers for the outer bearing. There is a specific Way in which to re install everything. Unless you are set up to do everything, you shouldn't attempt it. Go get a manual for your truck and have a look to see if it's something you want to tackle. How do you change the rotors on a Ford F250?
did u remove da brake lines and also u might have to pop it out if its rusted it will be harder to take off and also there is a center bolt on the hub take a look at that and see if UN screwed it or not

How to I change the rotors on a 94 Civic CX?

Is there a way not to remove the caliper but to swing it out of the way? If not. I see two bolts holding the caliper and brake shoe assembly in place are those the ones I need to remove the caliper. I know how to get the rotor off after that

. ThanksHow to I change the rotors on a 94 Civic CX?
To remove the rotor you must remove the caliper. Or at least the bracket holding the caliper.

You can not simply swing the caliper out of the way. You can only do this if you are slapping new pads on, and it's not recommended.

Always get rotors turned when doing a brake job to ensure proper pad to surface contact. How to I change the rotors on a 94 Civic CX?
Yes those two bolts holds it and it has to be remove to change the rotorHow to I change the rotors on a 94 Civic CX?
no you have to take the calipers off then slide off the rotors

  • How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?

I am in the middle of my brake and rotor replacement project and I am stuck - literally! I got the calipers off and I know that you turn those bolts to the right (despite the righty tighty lefty loosy rule). When I take the bolts out to remove the rotors, do I turn the bolt to the right or left? My brakes were GONE so the bolts are pretty much burnt into place with brake dust and I want to be sure I'm turning them the right way. It took me 20 minutes and a whole lot of elbow grease just to get my calipers off! I don't want to strip my bolts and end up having to drill them out.

-Oh, and yeah I am a girl who LOVES cars. I'm trying to do this myself. I want to do this without having to call my dad for help. I have something to prove. I want to go to the Nascar Technical Institute and work on race cars, maybe even drive one one day. I know what I'm doing, It's just been 7 years and 2 kids since I've done this. I do have 2 years of auto mechanic training. Sorry if this is a stupid question. My book for my car isn't here and my brakes went out so I can't go get it. I know what I'm doing, I just need a little reminder on HOW, PLEASE?!?How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?
Im guessing you removed the caliper and left the bracket in place? And now your trying to get the bracket off? Most likely you wont be able to do it with just a 1/2 in drive, your going to need a bar to put on the end to get more leverage(breaker bar) I had to use it on my a couple months ago. I think the drivers side you push the bar down(towards the ground) and passenger your push up(towards the top). How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?
Take the nuts off the wheels. Remove the tires. ratchet and socket and remove bolt from back of caliper on both sides slide up and off. The brake pads slide right out on both sides. and then pull rotor straight towards you and off. Reverse process to put back on.How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?
Mike is right, 1/2 will work just use what is called a cheater bar! It's 2' pipe about 30-40%26quot; long slip over the ratchet/breakerbar, and pry away. It will make the job so easy, it's leverage! How do I change rotors on my 2000 mustang?
Every rotor I have ever replaced was just slipped on over the lugs, and didn't require removing any bolts (after you take off the calipers of course).

If yours are bolted on, then you might want to get some rust buster and spray it on the bolts. Let it soak in really good, and then try popping them loose again.

Good luck - and I think it's awesome that you are a girl who wants to work on cars!!

How do I change out Rear drum brake on a 2000 Dodge Neon to make them disk brakes like the front.?

I have a 2000 Dodge Neon 2.0L I bought front/rear drilled and slotted rotors for. I am trying to change out the rear Drum brakes and replace it with an assembly to house calipers so I may use my matching Rotos on the back. I just got new rims and it looks very bad against the new rim.How do I change out Rear drum brake on a 2000 Dodge Neon to make them disk brakes like the front.?
this would be an expensive and time consuming conversion.

the brake lines, maybe master cylinder, and rear brake mounts would have to be changed, go to a junk yard and get all the parts off of a vehicle

How hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina?

My brakes wore out on my 1998 chevrolet lumina and i will probably need rotors and pads...i would like to know how much im looking at for a shop to do it and if possible could i do it myselfHow hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina?
Well its a GM product so it must be bad.... Kidding but it will help to have some of the right tools. If you don't have any of the tools I suggest Autozone and Advanced rent most of this stuff out pretty cheep. Obviously the Caliper needs to be removed from the mounting bracket first and remove the old pads from the retaining clips. You will need a Caliper compressor to push the piston back into the bores for the front disc breaks. Once you have done that you can put brake grease on the back of the pads making sure you get nothing on the friction surface and load them back into the caliper. Clean and grease the guide pins as well so the caliper can move well. Then just bolt it back on and your done with the front.

The Rear is a bit harder. You will need to purchase a break hardware kit with all the springs and a shoe hold down spring tool. The easiest way I have found to remove the springs would be to use a wire coat hanger to just unhook everything. The E Break clip is always a hassle but they sell tools to make it easy but a regular flathead screw driver will work fine to get it off. A pair of pliers to put the knew one on will work fine. Sometimes the hole which the E break rivet goes through needs to be drilled out to fit. Grease the backing plate on the 6 raised bumps where the shoes slide against. Grease and retract the self adjustor and then put everything back the way you found it and your done. It isn't as hard as I probably made it seem but it might be time consuming if its your first time. Make sure before you put the car in gear to pump the breaks about 10 times to be safe otherwise you won't be able to stop. Good luck How hard is it to change brakes on a 1998 chevy lumina?
Not hard if you have some basic tools and a little patience. Check out the %26quot;repair guides%26quot; on autozone.com. You will pay a lot more to have a shop do it, probably around $300 with rotors.

  • Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?

I changed the front rotors and pads in my 02' Prizm myself, with great success. I just researched how the pads, rotors and calipers work together and how they are housed and bam I bought a couple jack stands, and a jack and I changed my front disc brakes for the first time, taking about 1.5 hrs. Now this car has drum brakes in the back, and I wanted to know how much harder is that to replace for someone like me you think? I now know how drum system's work, and have all the tools to change the brakes, but i wanna get an idea of what i should be expecting. Also if you have done this, is there any advice you would give me? Thanks! Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
Take a picture of the shoes, springs and all the other stuff BEFORE you take it apart.

    You can do it.

    Got a spring brake tool?

    And retainer tool?

You can do it without them, but it's a bugger getting it all back together.

Oh, and a brake adjuster spoon too.Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
If you are doing it for the first time it is best to jack up both sides of the car and set on jack stands pull both wheels and drums and use one side as a reference to put the other side back together a few more parts than the front pads but it is easy to do. This is how i learned many many years ago.Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
I agree, do one side at a time and use the other as a reference. Its not as easy as disc brakes but you should be able to figure it out. Plan on it taking longer than a few hours your first time Good luck! Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
You'll need a few drum brake tools - a tool to release and reinstall the springs and a tool to install the keepers against the shoes.

Disassemble one side at a time and lay the springs out on the floor in the position that you removed them. It's good to have the other side as a guide if you get confused (keep in mind, it's a mirror image - left to right is reversed).

Put a little dab of grease on the tabs where the shoes ride against the backing plate, check the self adjuster for proper operation, slap the drum back on and you should be good to go.

If the pedal seems lower than usual, try tapping the brake while you back up - this will self adjust the brakes. Are changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
its a pain in the *** getting it back together..disc brakes are a breeze compared to drums. need a spring tool of course. also when putting the drum back on the shoes mess with the star wheel to get the shoes to just be scraping the drum by a hair. good luckAre changing brake drums as easy as changing disc brakes?
Easier if you are just going to change the drums, just take the old one off and replace it with the new one. But if you are talking about doing the whole back break system, then yes it can be, only because you have to take it a part and put it back together the right way. If you know how it works then you have it half beat.

The only thing I can tell you that will make a difference is that, you should take your time and clean every thing as clean as possible.

Make sure you clean or replace the masters as well as the shoes of course and make sure to bleed the entire system when you are done starting with the one that is farthest from the master break cylinder in the engine compartment which will be the right rear wheel.

    Good luck....peace....

How to make sure brake pads are properly installed, 2005 toyota corolla?

Im first time brake change on this car, im replacing the rotors and pads, but i see a clip that goes somehow on ine of the pads. Just want to make sure how to do this. How to make sure brake pads are properly installed, 2005 toyota corolla?
the clip is likely the anti rattle clip or its a brake squeeler. the antirattle spring or clip helps stop chatter of the pads. it is often held in place by the pads. it is usually visible on top of the caliper. if its brake pads your doing be sure to clean and use the packet recomended for disc brake quiting as well. also even though new or turned clean the braking surfaces with brake clean on the rotors. there is often a film of protective oil placed on the surface to stop surface rust from forming durring shipping or storage.

I have a 1999 F250 SUPER Duty, V10, 4X4 and a brake rotor problem. How thick are the new rotors supposed to B?

When I changed the new rotors I compressed the pads and now the caliper is rubbing the new rotor. Do I have to get the new rotor turned before install? If not then what is the thickness of the rotor supposed to be so I can mic it.I have a 1999 F250 SUPER Duty, V10, 4X4 and a brake rotor problem. How thick are the new rotors supposed to B?
    1. You always machine new rotors because 90 percent of the time they will be slightly warped........never believe what the box states on it.

    2. The front rotors should be 1.5 inch or 38.1 mm's.

    3. All Ford's will sooner or later need calipers because of the material they use.

    4. The rubbing might be that the calipers are stuck........

How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?

P.S if i dont use my breaks but i use my parking break to stop my car befor i change the rotors will the caliper close tightly when i take it off the rotor and do i have to bleed the breaks? How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?
    The front is very easy.

    Remove the wheel

    Remove the Caliper

    Remove the Caliper saddle

Clean new rotor with brake cleaner spray (to remove protective coating!)

Slide off old rotor, slide on new rotor

    Reinstall caliper saddle

    Compress caliper piston

    Reinstall caliper

    Rear Rotors:

    Same deal.

Only difference is that the rear caliper piston does not get compressed, instead you have to screw it in!!! You will see notches on the the piston. If you are lucky you can use needlenose pliers. Best bet is buy the universal rear brake piston tool at a car parts shop. Looks like a cube with a 3/8th inch rachet hole on each side and nubs along the outside. Find which nubs fit your piston and put a rachet on the opposing side. Press and turn clockwise to compress the piston.

Good luckHow do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?
same way as you would have done in 1972.. remove the grease cap.. pull the cotter pin.. take off the spindel nut remove the callipers.. pull the rotors put in new bearings and seals and reassemble. nothings changed.... this isnt even close to being rocket science...

Oh and always compress the calipers when doing breaks... all the way they are self adjusting... and no you dont have to bleed em if you do it right...How do i change the rotors on my 02 Grand am?

Do i need new brake rotors?

recently i started hearing a squeaking noise from the front passenger side of my car. kinda hard to explain but its a squeak squeak squeak like in a rhythm. when i speed up the rhythm speeds up and when i slow down it also slows down. so i figured it was my rotors but asked a friend just to be sure and he said to try changing my brake pads first. so i changed them and it helped for about a week and how they are squeaking again and alot worse than before and kind of embarrassing to say the least. before i bought some rotors, i just wanted your opinions. thanks for any help. oh i dont know if it matters but it is on a 1999 chevy malibu. thanks.Do i need new brake rotors?
it could be u caused brake fade and the pads are glazed over.are they semi metallic is do maybe u didn't break them inDo i need new brake rotors?
Your brakes pads were changed. A squeak squeak squeak would indicate a warped rotor:

    1. Buy brand new rotors if they are inexpensive. Rotors can be as low as $20ish and above $200.

    2. Have a shop %26quot;turn%26quot; your rotors which means grinding them down so that they are perfectly flat. This is usually included if you have a %26quot;break job%26quot; done on your car. Or take the rotors off yourself and carry them into a machine shop that grinds rotors.Do i need new brake rotors?
Go to a auto part store and buy disc brake quite either blue or red and follow the directions.

tacoma with 30k on it. i can %26quot;feel%26quot; im gonna need to replace the brakes at aroudn 35k. how do i tell if i should resurface rotors? it doesnt really feel bumpy or choppy when i brake. how much should i pay to resurface my rotors? do i need to do two or 4. back are drum.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
If your back wheels have drum brakes, you won't need rotors for them.

Resurfacing rotors usually isn't worth it. Even with newer cars, new rotors can be bought for $40-50 and will include a warranty. Brakes are something I don't like to chance. It's a small investment with a large reward.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
30,000 miles on it your rotors should be fine, when using your new pads take it easy for the first 5000 miles.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
While you (or a service centre) are changing your front brake pads, check the rotor condition. If they are reasonably in good condition they will be ok. Measure the thickness of the rotor with a micrometer or caliper. They must be within the car manufacturer's specs.

After replacing the pads, %26quot;run them in%26quot; as specified by the manufacturer. This is normally a few heavy brake applications at different speeds. about 15 minutes is needed, not 5000 miles.

Change you rear brake shoes every second pad change.

Good luck.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
when ever brake pads are re-newed, rotors must be machined smooth for flush contact (sweet), now rotors should only be replaced when they are close, or exceed minimum thickness (check specs through manufacturer or ring a rotor supplier, because sometimes your local mechanic might want to do a 'swifty' e.g. he loves your cash). Do your mechanical research and save a bundle.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
you would be better to just spend the extra money and put new rotors on if needed, new will make your new brakes last longer also.Changing brakes, but what about rotors?
You should resurface the rotors or replace them with some Centric Econo rotors. The new rotors may cost just a few bux more than a resurfacing and are better than most other premium brands.

I sometimes %26quot;pad slap%26quot; when I do a break job on my cars if the rotors don't have any dark blue areas. I always replace the brake hardware kits, and I never have any brake noise.

I would also inspect the rear brakes. Clean out the dust with a garden hose and then hit it with some brake parts cleaner. Pull the boots back on the wheel cylinders and make sure there isn't any brake fluid leaking. These are just dust caps. Then adjust your rear brakes and slap the tires back on using a torque wrench. Exact specifications don't matter as much as even torque

well when you take the caliper off to change the pads? just grab the rotor and pull it off but when you buy new ones make sure you clean the rotor surface with brake cleaner before putting them on. they put stuff on them to keep them from rusting when shipping them.after you clean them good, slide it on the hub, put the caliper back on with new pads and tighten the caliper bolts. they are easy to do.

I think you're being had. Audi's were designed to have repeated safe stops at Autobahn speeds. In this country, where excessive speed is unlawful, European brake systems usually last twice as long. Front brakes usually 50-60,000 miles; rear brakes, 90-100,000 miles. Never use anything but genuine Audi parts in your brake system(don't go to Firestone and use aftermarket anything parts) The only exception are the brake pads made in Australia that leave no brake dust. Have your dealership prove to you that you have premature wear in your brake system, it should still be under warranty. Have your brake system examined at a brake shop for a second opinion, but don't let them bastardize your fine car with non OEM parts, you'll be sorry in the long run. If your brakes are wearing this soon, are you a %26quot;two-foot%26quot; driver??This will eventually cause premature wear in any car.Good Luck! How much do Audi brake pads cost and rotors?
use only audi OEM parts. plus you need a special tool on the rears. the price sounds correct but make sure they check the front rotors again and ask them if they are in spec. i dont think they would be bad after 27,000 miles so make sure they measure it and tell you.

If I want a back yard mech. to do it, and change front brake pads, how much in labor should it be???What does putting a brake rotor on a 2000 Escort zx2 entail?
On the Ford Focus, it is just a matter of taking off the wheel, unbolting the caliper, removing the pad and rotor and reversing the process with the new materials. I would imagine no more than 30 minutes per wheel. Shops usually charge $50+ an hour. You do the math.

How to tell if my axle is bent ?

I spun around in the snow and really bent my rim pretty bad after replacing the rim I still have a squealing coming from that wheel. If I have to change the axle how hard is it.How to tell if my axle is bent ?
Make your wheels and steering wheel straight and go into a straight line. If your axle is perfectly straight, theoretically you would go straight. If your axle is bent, it will slightly swerve left or right. Replacing an axle is very difficult to do yourself, and getting it done at a mechanic would run you about $1000 per axle. How to tell if my axle is bent ?

your minimum thickness should be stamped on the rotor itself, and spraying anything on the rotor is a bad idea. any brake quite i have ever seen or used goes on the back of the pad between the backing plate and the caliper/ piston itself. those rotors should last you longer than the life if a set of pads. btw you can pick up brake quite or something similar at your local p[art storeHow thick should your rotors be?

My quote states x2 brake pads, one $76, the other $93. Why isn't he using the same type of pads? Also, is he assuming i want the best quality ones, should i ask for cheaper?

Plus x4 rotors, $57 each. But he told me only the fronts needs replacing. Are there 2 rotors per wheel?

    labour $130

    total AUD$530

    !!

I have not noticed any vibrating or warping. Only a put-put-put kind of shaking sometimes, when i change gears, just feels like it's a bit cold, and i'm not using the brakes at that time.

Might get another mechanic to just replace pads and check how damaged the rotors are.Brake pad and rotor change advice?
From your listed prices you've been quoted cheap off-shore brake rotors. Go to: autopartswarehouse.com and invest in EBC dimpled and slotted brake rotors which are produced in Great Britain. While your at their site pick out ceramic based brake pads. Do the job yourself and save $200.00!Brake pad and rotor change advice?
You really need to get another quote. Brake pad and rotor change advice?
his quote is for a four wheel brake job... the pads come in sets for front and rear.... not individual wheels... even though he said the rears may be thick enough now most shops will machine them to make sure they are not warped - if there is a warp they try to machine it out and then they may be to thin... so just to cover their butt they include new ones in the estimate... there are a few shops that just replace them though so always make sure to check the bill before you pay

I do mine myself and can't machine the rotors so they just get replaced... depending on how you drive they should last 20,000 to 40,000 miles... if they can be machined at that point then you may get more out of them... hope this helps and good luck with itBrake pad and rotor change advice?
You are a dangerous breed my friend. Thank GOD you pile of junk is in another country as not to present a danger here.

20mm is spec and your at 19mm... Here if your involved in an accident and your car is inspected and found to be lacking in the brake area you get charged with criminal negligence.

The estimate is in the ballpark.

How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?

We have the wheels off and are trying to remove the calipers and thought all we had to do was remove two bolts and the caliper would slide off, but there is some kind of %26quot;pin%26quot; holding it onto the drum. Please help -- I have to leave town today! How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
First remove the cover from the master cylinder resevoir. Then place a chisel or punch on the corner of the outside end of one pin and strike it with a hammer, moving the notch of the pin inside the groove of the caliper and knuckle. Repeat this on the opposite corner of the same pin (still on the outside), and then you should be able to slide the pin all the way out the other side. Repeat this procedure on the other pin and then you should be able to remove the caliper. Compress it with big channel lock pliers or a c clamp so that it will fit over the new pads and rotors. You may see fluid coming from the master cylinder while compressing the pistons. This is OK but try to clean it up so that it does not damage any of the parts that it touches. It is a good idea to replace the pins with new ones because sometimes they are damaged during removal or just get worn and sloppy. You don't want to take a chance of having them slide out while driving! Make sure to reinstall the master cylinder cap when you are done. Good luck! How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
Block the tires real good, then put it in neutral. How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
well, there should not be any pin holding it to the drum.

There is usually two types of breaks on these vehicles.Front disk brakes and rear drum brakes.

There was an option for this vehicle to have 4 wheel disk brakes. If you have these it should be easy.

On the brake calipers there is two bolts holding the caliper to the control arm. These are the only thing holding the caliper onto the rotor.

The thing to remember is that the brake calipers have pressure pucks in them to push the brake pads against the rotors when you apply the brakes.

Now, even though you have no one stepping on the brakes now, those pucks still are pretty tight against the rotors and makes it hard to get the calipers to slide off the rotor.

I am going to tell you a trick to help release some of that pressure so they slide off easier.

Have some one step on the brake pedal and hold it down while you release the side your working on's brake bleeder nut. (10mm nut with hole in center used to release air from the brake lines)Now, loosen it slightly while they hold down brake petal then close it after a couple seconds while they still have the brake pedal depressed. You should have had some fluid squirt out of it.What this is going to do is help release some of the pressure from them pucks and make it easier to slide caliper off rotor. The calipers slide upward to come off rotor in a complete Assembly.Repeat for all sides.

Now also, before changing the new pads and trying to slide back onto rotor, you need to depress those pucks all the way. you can use a %26quot;C%26quot; clap and put it on center of puck and twist it in slow till you see it depress all the way down.then add ne brake shoes and slide on caliper over the rotor.

Just remember to step on brakes a couple times after you complete all 4 brakes and have car back on its wheels before you start it and try to move it.Cause if you dont, you will have a few seconds with out any brakes because of depressing them pucks all the way.

Good luck, you should do fine. How do you disengage the caliper when changing the brakes and rotors on a 94 Ford Explorer?
if caliper dosn't come off easily you can carfully work a screwdriver between rotor and shoe to push plunger in a little, rotor probably has grooves, be careful not to break it

How often do i need to change rotors for my car?

I have a 2003 mercedes. today i took my car for brake service. i only have 33000 miles on my car. all i needed was front brake pads. so the service guy now tells me that i will need front and back rotors also which amounts to over 1 thousand dollars because they say my rotors are completely worn out. I drive mostly freeways and never really brake hard or anything? could it be true? How often do i need to change rotors for my car?
Your first mistake was to take your car in for brake service.

First get your car out of there. At home, jack up your car, take each wheel off and inspect the rotors. They will be right there in front of your face. Inspect your brake pads too. They should have at least 1.5mm on each side left of %26quot;meat%26quot;. Replace them if they don't. They cost around $7.50 for each wheel.

Run your hand over the rotors. They should be smooth without grooves or a high lip on the outside. A minor lip is ok. The rotors may be ventilated (have holes in them), and that's ok.

If you have grooves or a high lip, the rotor needs to be turned (resurfaced). Remove the rotor after removing the brake caliper. It will pull straight off. Take the rotor to an autoparts store and they will turn the rotor for about $10. If you have 4 bad ones, that will cost you $40. If the rotor is particularly bad, sometimes the store will not resurface them. Or maybe you can't find a place to do it. Or maybe you want to save even more money.

Take the rotor home, jack up the entire drive end of your car with both wheels off the ground. Jack each side, insert a jackstand, and then do the other side.

Put the rotor back on the spindle and secure it with the lug nuts. Don't put the wheel on yet. Start the car, put it in drive, and let the drive rotors rotate (turn) in the air. Take a belt sander and resurface the rotors as they are spinning. Wala, you saved an additional $10 per wheel. If the rotor is not from a drive wheel or the non-drive rotor will not fit the drive spindle, then you can mount the rotor on some other rotary table (like a record player) or mechanism and use the belt sander.

Sorry, but if you pay $1000 for new rotors, I will personally come over there and slap you.How often do i need to change rotors for my car?

That guy is tring to rip you off, at the most the rotors may need turned, Take it somewhere elseHow often do i need to change rotors for my car?
hes ******* with you. No way you wore out rotors in 30k unless youre doing alot of heavy racing. usually they last 100k+ miles. You can get em turned if theyre badly rutted. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?
Rotors don't last nearly as long as they used to because they outlawed asbestos brake pads. Asbestos brake pads used to take the wear; the semi-metallic pads and ceramic pads today wear the rotor down more. It's not entirely unbelievable that they could need new rotors. Of course, rotors for most cars cost under $50 apiece, so check the parts stores to see if you can get cheaper replacement rotors.

Also, it's likely that, although the rotors may be worn out of spec, they will work fine if you just replace the pads....problem is, the mercedes dealer won't do it, because, if the rotors are out of spec, they would be liable if anything happened, plus they couldn't warranty it. So if you can do a brake job yourself (it's really not that difficult, if you have a repair manual) just put new brake pads on and don't even worry about the rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?
Sound like these joker are taking you to the bank. At 33k it should be your first brake change and only require rotor to be turn to give new brakes pad a fresh surface to mate on. Also, at that low mileage there should be plenty of meat(metal) to allow them to turn the rotor.

I'm a cheap person so I take my chances and just place new pad on without turning the rotors. also, i put lots of brake lube on back of pad to keep them quiet. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?
Have him give you a written estimate detailing every part he is going to change, and make sure he includes labor and hazardous waste removal, which he will have to charge you for, and then go get a second estimate like the other responders stated. After you get one and maybe for more proof a second estimate, contact the States Attorney for your state. This guy is definitely looking at making some quick money from you or someone. You can also look up the price of rotors by using www.advanceautoparts.com or any auto parts store. You can also contact the Mercedes dealer and see what they charge for the rotors. Most garages charge upwards of 50.00 per hour labor. I am unsure of your car, however most rotors can be changed in one hour per wheel, so figure at least 2 hours labor.

If your rotors wear out in 33,000 miles, you need to get a different vehicle. I have a 94 Ford truck that has been driven almost daily for over 3 years with my wife and I together running it over 65,000 miles and I still have not had to change the rotors. I have had the pads changed twice, but no rotors. How often do i need to change rotors for my car?
There is no mileage recommendation on replacing rotors, when being serviced, they are measured with a micrometer for minimum thickness, if they are below this specification then they need to be replaced. On some domestic cars and trucks, the rotors are very thick in relation to the minimum spec and can be machined 2 or three times before replacing but I have found on Mercedes-Benz that this is not always true, and also they use a hard semi-metallic pad that wears rotors out even faster. If you are in doubt of the honesty of your mechanic, then a second opinion is helpful, and then you can ask him these questions: What is the minimum thickness? What are my rotors measuring? Can you show me? This will keep them honest. Also, if one side is worn and the other o.k., This can indicate other problems like calipers sticking or something.

Brake rotors for a 2006 Dodge Ram 4x4 Quad Cab SLT?

I had new ones put on about 2 months ago because they were warped. I did not change the brake pads at that time because they looked good. Well, after these two months I have the same vibration when braking. How hard is it to replace the rotors myself when I replace the pads? I have done pads before and they are not that hard, but never attempted the rotors before? Too difficult compared to replacing the pads?

Also, on my truck, are there rear brake pads? If so should I replace all 4 at the same time?

Thanks!!Brake rotors for a 2006 Dodge Ram 4x4 Quad Cab SLT?
you should never replace rotors and not replace the pads because if the rotors are warped then this means the pads are worn off uneven ,so now you will have to replace the pads and get the rotors turned and hope that repairs the problem, you should do the front as a set and the rear as a set,and you should have 4 wheel disc brakes on that one, look to be sure though, good luck.Brake rotors for a 2006 Dodge Ram 4x4 Quad Cab SLT?

take a hammer and someting that you can push them through with. just bang them through with the hammer and a big flathead screwdriver is what i used on my 91 F150 and just wiggle off the caliper and remove.....make sure u open up the caliper with a big C Clamp so when the new pads are installed u can get it back over the rotor. when done just bang the clip back through the holes from the front back to where they sat originally

  • Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?

About a year ago getting my tires changed the mechanic mentioned I need new pads. Sure enough they started to grind soon after. I changed all four front pads. Now less then a year later the grinding is back (was always just on the driver's side). I drive easy, no hard braking or drifting around corners. Is it ok to just change the one rotor? How about the pads? The sales guy also was trying to sell a bunch of extras like cleaner to get the oil off the rotor, replacement grease for the caliper bolts and something else because of the time of year (salt). The rotor box says %26quot;ready to install%26quot;, so do I also really need all that other stuff?

In case it matters: 2002 Saturn SL2 front wheel drive %26lt;100K milesIs it ok to change just one brake rotor?
Its fine to do if your broke and only one is giving u the problem but chances are the other isn't far behind. I think your problem is either worn calliper or wheel baring because the problem is only on the 1 side. As for what the sales guy was trying to sell you pretty well bull other than its a good idea to keep the rotor as clean as possible and to keep your calliper bolts or any bolt u might have to take off again with anti seize.

That %26quot;sales guy%26quot; does NOT sound good to me! Run (don't walk) to the door and say goodbye forever. Make sure to try another independent repair shop you might find by searching the below link. That new garage will remove both your rotors (easy to do) and simply turn them done on a lathe and charge you about $30 plus the cost of the new pads for a total cost of $125. Do the complete front brake job the right way, and you'll pay less and be safer driving in the long run.

Even though it says ready to install, they do ship them with a light oil, and I always spray new rotors down with brake cleaner. As far as replacing one rotor, I would rather not. In hard braking it could cause the car to swerve slightly. Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?

3 i can't believe the ****** is trying to nickle and dime you...charge for a smear of grease? and a spray of cleaner PLEASE punch him for me!Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?
if it did it the 2nd time then it,s probably the caliper sticking. you can change just 1 side unless the other rotor is thin then you need to change both rotors to get good braking action. also when you buy rotors the factory puts grease or oil on them to keep them from rusting so before installing them wash them down with brake cleaner. Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?
clean all oil off the rotors and grease the bolts to make sure the calipers slide back in forth freely if they dont you will eat brake pad up.Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?
i would rather change %26quot;both%26quot; rotors at the same time. and if you plan to replace the brake pads, change both too.

the grinding sound that you feel is probably the cause of a warped rotor... this happens when the rotor gets hot when driving then a splash of water hits the rotor or going straight to the car wash after a long drive.

you don't have to buy those brake cleaners or grease.

the rotors are not that expensive anyway and even the brake pads. the expensive one is the %26quot;brake caliper%26quot;... but i don't think that you have a problem with this part.Is it ok to change just one brake rotor?
If you're wearing out one side prematurely, there's a reason. You may have a stuck caliper. The caliper must be free to slide side-to-side on the guide pins as the pads wear. If it's sticking, then you'll likely wear out one pad on that side before the others. If the rotor on the other side still has plenty of metal thickness left, then you could just replace one side. BUT you should have the old rotor ground or machined to remove any 'glaze'- that's when the surface gets polished from wear and heat. If you don't remove the glaze the new rotor will grab better than the old one and cause it to pull to one side. You MUST replace ALL the pads at the same time.

You need to clean and lubricate the guide pins (high-quality bearing grease works fine) and the holes where they slide. There's a small rubber seal that keeps out dirt. If the rubber is broken, dirt and water can get in and cause the caliper to stick. Also, you need to use shims behind the pads and pad silencer goop on the shims. Otherwise you'll end up with brakes that squeal.

How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?

    I have a 1999 Acura Integra.

I went to the shop and had the following done:

new brake fluid, changed air filter, front brake pads, rear brake pads, front rotors.

It was 185 parts+ 160 labor came out to be a total of $361.

Do you think it was a fair price? How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?
THats fair for not doing it urself...If it was my car, it would of cost me 160, i do all that myself :)

But to do it yourself would require about 200 to 400 in tools and safety equipment. This pays for itself after a few years. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?
thats cheaper than dirt/in nj front pads are 125.cramic/discs are 60 ea and the rear pads are 115/plus fluid and 160 labor and 750 for air filterHow much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?
Although the labor cost always kills ya, the cost of the parts you got sounds fair. Rotors can cost $50 each or more, pads are usually $20 or more and theres almost all of your cost and you still have the filter ($5) and fluid to account for. You could always go to www.autozone.com and put in your car make and model and then find the cost of the parts there. How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?
Seems fair if the work is quality. Dirty job too.How much for front brake pads, rear brake pads, and front rotors?
It all depends on what brands/quality parts he got you.

Assuming, he got you brand name parts at the lowest price (better than some cheap ebay brand at same price):

    Front rotor set around $80

    Brakes F and Rear: $100

Total 180 ish so thats a very good price.

For labor. Installing the front rotor and pads on each side takes about 30 minutes for total:

~1 hr on the front rotors/brake pads.

    ~45 minutes for rear pads

~20 minutes for bleeding and changing brake fluid.

    Total labor: about 2hr +

Verdict: Part fee was excellent. Labor fee was fair. You got good deal.

How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?

I've looked everywhere for answers to these questions. I've just changed my brake pads but am unsure how brake rotors are supposed to look or feel. What does turning them do? If a rotor isn't perfectly smooth, what effect does it have on your brakes? Thanks. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
get rid of that Toyota van already, Ray!!! do you see many of these on the road? there's a reason why not......How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
Rotors over time wear thinner in thickness..... for each make/model there is a minimum thickness of the rotor before it is deemed unusable or unsafe..

if the rotor isn;t perfectly smooth it will wear the brake pads abnormally or faster sicne it has to grind itself down to fit the grooves of the rotorHow do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
If the rotor needs turned you will feel a vibration while braking.

They are usually stamped with the minimum thickness that they should be turned to near the wheel stud area.

I personally never turn them, and just buy new ones because the new rotors usually cost only a few more dollars than the cost to turn the old ones. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
the rotors should be turned everytime the brakes are replaced so the pads break in evenly and you get full pad upon brakeing, the symptions of a bad or warped rotor is a pulsating feeling in the brake pedal when applying the brakes. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
Typically a bad rotor will either be warped (high bumps in random places) or wavy (high and low spots radiating out from the center). You can use a straight edge to see how straight the rotor is in various areas to get an idea if its ok or not. But honestly with the low price of imported rotors at most parts stores, virtually no one turns rotors anymore. My friend who runs his own shop sold off his rotor resurfacer several years ago, you can't charge customers 15 bucks a rotor to turn them when new ones are 25, so you don't waste your time you just sell them the new rotor and make your money marking those up and installing them. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
If your steering wheel shakes when you apply the brakes you should have them turned. If you noticed that the rotors looked as if they had grooves worn around them, you should have them turned. If you had hot spots or discoloration, it wouldn't hurt to have them turned. If you've had them turned more than once or twice and a lot of material was removed then you should consider having them replaced. The guy turning them should be able to put a set of mics on them and tell you if they are getting too thin to turn again. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
i own a shop and you can look at them and see if the have grooves cut in them or odd markings on them that shouldn't be there, they should look smooth, you can also tell this by if they wobble when you put your foot on the brake pedal also,if you feel it go up and down a lot this means their warped, most of the time you can just remove the wheel and rotate the rotor a little and see if it wobbles or has deep grooves in it,if you see any of this you either need to get these turned or get new ones for it,good luck with it,i hope this helps. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
a brake rotor has a musurement on each car, most of the time marked on the inside of the rotor.if you put pads on its a good idea to have thrm turned.reason is there can be high and low spots on the surface and this can cause the brakes to shakeor make the car jerk when applied.most rotors get damaged by the driving habits of the driver,if you drive fast and hit your brakes to make a quik stop, that causes the rotors to get the high spots in them.also riding the brake will cause this.if you drive regular and not alot of stopping involved, you wont have to cut the rotors too much.just enought to get the layer off the surface of the rotor from build up.How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
a good brake shop will take a micrometer that measures thickness and measure each rotor, then compare results to the measurements that is stamped on each rotor/hub if within limits they usually turn them and that provides a smooth surface for the brake pads -----with a un-even surface or a ridged surfaced that will cause the pads to be ridged or not wear evenlyHow do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
the rotors make a squeeking noise and when you stop you kind of have a buzzing sound and it will harm your brakes life and its better that you change them as soon as possibly because the brake life will go out and it will get ruinedHow do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
Your rotors can be spot checked with this trick. If you can not write a smooth line across the surface of the rotor with a regular ball-point pen; it needs to be turned if it has enough thickness to be machined. What I mean is to try to write your signature in several places on the %26quot;cleaned%26quot; rotor, without any blank spots or skipping, if you can; the rotors are smooth enough for good pad contact.

This only works on solid faced rotors; this is Yahoo Answers after all.How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
the rotors should be turned every time you replace the brake pads. they should be as smooth as a babys butt on the surface that they touch the brake pads. rotors can only be turned down to a safe minimum thickness which is measured in hundredths of an inch. take them to your local parts store to have them measured and possibly turned. if you dont have them turned, the uneven ness (sp) and grooves take away from the total surface area that your brake pads touch them and your brakes will overheat. the excessive friction on the smaller surface area creates intense heat. the pads and the rotors should mate up together nice and smooth. if you dont turn them and the heat builds up the rotors will warp, or become out of round laterally causing a pulsating feeling in the brake pedal. How do you know when a brake rotor is bad? How do you know when they need to be turned?
when your rotors are bad,you will get a pulsation in your brakes, and when you get the rotors turned, you should get even braking action, without pulsations.

When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?

I'm about to get my brake pads done because they are screeching like crazy when I stop. The mechanic said I should get my rotors done too. He hasn't actually looked at the cat yet. How impotrant is this, and do I have to do this at the same time? Also, how do I know if those need to be done too?

Thnaks, usually my friend helps me with my car but I have to go to the shop this time, so I'm confused.

p.s. I drive a v6 mustang, if that helps. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
if the rotors arent warped or gouged from previous brake pads i wouldnt worry about it. easy way to tell if rotors are warped is at medium speeds and highway speeds, your steering wheel will vibrate back/forth either violently or steadily...you know the annoying steering wobble...thats warped rotors 97% of the time.

its common practice to have rotors turned too if they are only slightly gouged or warped.

the rattling is most probably the dust shield on that wheel. its probably cracked and just flapping in the wind against the suspension and the wheel. it just prevents dust from the brake pads from going everywhere. I've had several cars I just ripped them the rest of the way off and left it.

if the car is running fine and not throwing codes, then the cat is ok. if the cat clogged up, you either would have a really crappy running car or it wouldnt crank at all. he cant physically check the cats other than looking at the external cases. too many bends in the exhaust system to even see the honeycomb. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
when the pads are changed, the rotors are turned at the same time. this makes them smooth and straight. if the rotors don't meet a certain thickness, then you replace them with new ones. before the rotors are turned, the mechanic will measure them and tell you if you need new ones. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
the only way to know for sure if the rotors need changed or %26quot;turned%26quot; is to physically touch the rotors and see if they have deep scratches or grooves in them. ususally (not always) u will have to replace them about every two sets of pads. %26quot;Turning%26quot; means to grind them down so they are smooth again. Sometimes its as cheap to buy new ones as it is to have the old ones ground. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
Rotors should be machined at same time. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
It is good to change the rotors as well. But you dont have too. You should soon. But if you dont have the funds dont stress it. The most important thing is to stop the screetch.

I changed my front and rear pads but not the rotors. I plan on changing them soon but it hasnt caused me anything. My pads are still screetching in the front because I got some cheap and too hard pads. Im going to take them out since the shop didnt do it and put some antisqueal and see if that works. If not Im returning those brakes and getting my money back for better ones.

Its just easier to change the rotors while changing the pads but some people dont have all that money to do so. Once they take off your caliper it would be a simple swap to just put the new rotor on. Its a way they make some easy money as well. But it wont kill you. Just get them changed too or see if they can be resurfaced if they arent bad. Go somewhere and get a free brake check. In fact get second opinions as well. Nothing wrong with that. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
If the rotors are scratched or have rough surface or groves in the surface then any new pads you put on will be worn very fast.It is important to have them turned or replaced if needed but if the mechanic didnt even look at them...you could see yourself without taking the tire off if you can look through the wheel spokes or even feel the rotors. When I change my brake pads how imortant is it to do the rotors?
Screeching noise is very normal , since there is a sensor attached to the pads to alert you when it's time to get new pads , but keeping on driving your car with this noise for a long time , will damage the rotors , then you'll need to get new ones ( they run about $25 each), you should have the rotors TURNED when you replace the pads , %26amp; if they worn out then you better get new ones . Good Luck

I need exact instructions on how to change front brakes and rotors on a 2000 mustang.?

I want to change my brakes and rotors myself. No one thinks a girl can work on a car and I will prove them wrong! I have always done my own work on my car and will continue to do it. It has been years since I have done this though. I want to walk straight out there with the right tools in hand, and finish this job before they could even get started. I have done this before, but not to this car. I need answers ASAP please! If possible, please include socket sizes as well. Thanks!

My husband has changed rotors on a 90 honda accord befor but never a 2000 civic, is there a big difference? I need new front rotors and new brakes how hard it that to do?How to change front rotors on a 2000 honda civic?
The front rotors will need to be hydraulically pressed onto the hub. The pads themselves are very easy to replace. If your husband has access to a press or has a press you can have this simple task done for about $100 USD. It should only take about 30-45 minutes as well. How to change front rotors on a 2000 honda civic?

I dont think your car has the captured rotors. They should come off easy just have to take the 2 screws out that hold them on. you will need an impact driver to get them out.

How do you get the change brake pads light to go away on a 1999 Cadillac Seville STS?

It's really annoying. I put in new brake pads, but I didn't change the sensors and I'm not going to because they are stupid expensive for a feature thats pretty unneeded. Is there any way to keep this light off for good? It comes on every time I turn on the car and I have to hit the arrow up to turn it to something else.

Also, are those sensors the possible reason for the annoying chirp I hear while driving? It sounds like its coming from the wheel in the front but the rotors are new, brake pads are new and everything is in sound shape yet it makes the most annoying chirp ever. Could this be because the car thinks it needs new brake pads so its telling me to change by chirp and by stupid light on the dash? How do you get the change brake pads light to go away on a 1999 Cadillac Seville STS?
put a piece of black electrical tape over the light or buy the sensors. The chirp could be a number of things.

Ghetto fag? lmao. You're the idiot complaining about the light and you know you need the sensors replaced...which will fix the light..but of course you want a way around it....No not ghetto but u sound like a fag!How do you get the change brake pads light to go away on a 1999 Cadillac Seville STS?
yes it all could be because of bad sensor you might want to find out which fuse controls the light and maybe pull the light good luckHow do you get the change brake pads light to go away on a 1999 Cadillac Seville STS?

How much should I expect to pay to change brakes?

It would be the back brakes and rotors in a Ford Expedition 2003How much should I expect to pay to change brakes?
about a 150 bucks at most places and that includes them turning the rotors also, this should include labor and parts ,it only takes like an hour or less to do this, good luck. How much should I expect to pay to change brakes?
I would pay no more then aroun $500-$550 depending on the rotors. How much should I expect to pay to change brakes?
A lot of the cost will depend on what needs to be done. Do the rotors need to be turned? Are they warped enough that they need to be replaced? If it is just to replace the pads, then somewhere between 125-175 sounds about right.

    good luck.

How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?

    Hi,

My car is 01 Hyundai Sonata.

I recently had a car check up and the precision tune auto shop recommended me to get new ceramic brake pads and rotors and change the transmission oil, motor oil, brake fluid and the battery.

For those works, how much SHOULD it cost for me?, meaning what's the normal price range for the job?

They wanted $640. Do you think that cost makes sense?

I live in Northern California, near San Jose.

I'd appreciate your answers. Thank youHow much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Parts cost is about $60 for pads, $150 for rotors, $20 for tranny fluid, $20 for oil/filter, $10 for brake fluid and $85 for battery prior to labor you already are at $350, so 4.5 hours to do the job seems very good. Now, if you need all this work I don't know, I suggest getting a second opinion and compare with the scheduled maintenance list for your car and follow that. Tranny fluid every 30K, oil/filter 5K, rest of items as needed. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
I would say that is on the high end.

I would say that the most expensive things they are hitting you for are the pad and rotors, and the battery. These auto shops have most consumers accustomed to paying high prices for brake jobs, when in fact they are cheap (strictly speaking about changing the pads and rotars, not the ABS system, etc...).

The battery I'm guessing shouldn't cost over $65. You could do that yourself.

I would try to find a shop that would do it for under $450. How much Would it cost to change transmission fluid, motor oil, a battery, and front brake pads and rotors?
Well under $200 with quality parts if you do it your self. It's really easy stuff.

depending on if u wanted the drums and rotors turned or replaced.....the shop i worked at would have charged like this: turned with replacing pads in the front would have been 2.2 hours, turning drums and replacing shoes would have been 2.5---so 4.7 hours x 85 dollars an hour = 399.50 in labor----having them replaced would have been 1.5 x 85 and then 2.0 x 85 so that would be 297.50---thats all labor prices....so kind of expect something close to thatHow much would a mechanic shop charge for total brake change?

How to remove brake rotors on a 2005 Malibu Maxx?

I am trying to change the Brake pads and rotors and an 05 Malibu maxx. Getting the tire and the brake calipers removed is the easy part. But now I'm having a hard time getting the rotor off. Should the rotor come off freely after removing the calipers? Or is there something else holding it on that I'm not seeing? I thought maybe it was just really rusted on so I held a small piece of wood to it and tried to tap it loose with a hammer but this thing will not budge. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance! How to remove brake rotors on a 2005 Malibu Maxx?
Get rid of the wood, smack the front surface of the rotor between the wheel studs hard, turn it, hit hard, keep doing that til the rotor breaks loose from the hub. You are wasting time using wood. How to remove brake rotors on a 2005 Malibu Maxx?
it probably uses the same design common on most hondas. the rotor is probably pressed on the hub. you will have to remove the whole hub assembly and remove the rotor using a press. and you will need to replace the wheel bearing as wellHow to remove brake rotors on a 2005 Malibu Maxx?
it should just slide right off the hub after you remove the caliper. put a pry bar behind it and slap it good with a hammer but watch you don,t bend the backing plate.

Does anyone know how to change the breaks on a 06 Jetta. I have changed breaks bofore but not on a foreign car. Are there any tips or tricks I should know? cant say for sure, but a jetta's brakes shouldnt be any different than any other car, remove caliper, compress piston, remove old pads, clean everything with brake parts cleaner, install new pads, reinstall calipers, then dont overheat the new pads for a day or so. • Different rotors for manual and automatic?

Why are there different rotors for my car, if it is a manual or automatic? I just bought some rotors for my new used car cause someone doesnt know how to change brakes, and the rotors cost me 60 each, if it was an automatic it would of been 20 each. Did I just get ripped off?Different rotors for manual and automatic?
First off, if a parts man told me that I would be shopping around. I think it's more likely that there are 2 or 3 grades (90 day, one year and lifetime) and they happened to only have the lifetime in stock. The price may reflect a slightly higher quality product, but the price takes into account that you will probably be coming back for free rotors in the future. I never buy lifetime anything. Chances are, you won't own the car long enough to take advantage of it, or loose the receipt or something. If you haven't installed them, I would return them if I could find them somewhere else cheaper. Next time; shop and compare!Different rotors for manual and automatic?

Auto transmissions can add weight to a car, so sometimes the rotors are a different size (or other factors may effect them too), but this is not always the case.

I try to find a part numbers from the original manufacturer and compare them between different models. If the part number matches, then they are the same size etc.... The trick is that if the part numbers are different it doesn't always mean the parts are different. The only definite method if part numers don't match is to compare the specifications, so for rotors, diameter, thickness etc...Different rotors for manual and automatic?

How often are you supposed to change your brakes?

I have a 2000 BMW 323i. Anyone know on average how often I am supposed to change the brakes? (BMWs have to change the rotors as well as the pads everytime....so its really expensive.)How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
BMW's have to change the rotors so often because they are %26quot;Soft%26quot; and the pads eat through them.

Your e46 BMW is equipped with pad sensors that will tell you when you are getting close to needing your next brake job done.

Just to inform yourself more about your 3 series you will find that http://www.e46fanatics.com is a great resource for your auto.

It is a good idea to check them once a month with a quick visual check.

Typically with alot of high way driving you can go alot longer without replacing your pads. If you do alot of city driving you will find that you must replace them more often.

Regardless it ultimately is left up to whether you do a lot of heavy braking or downhill driving. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
It all depends on the driving habits and the vehicle. There is no set period of time or mileage to overhaul brakes. Most vehicle have a little device that tells you via a warning light or a little metal tab that ride against the rotor when you apply the brakes and make a screeching sound until you let off the peddle. I have heard that about BMW's, yes very expensive. You might try an independent mechanic and see what he can do for you.How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
roughly every 40-50,000 miles. you should replace your pads, and rotors only need to be replaces if damaged or warped. they should last a very long time.

There is no reason for you to replace your pads and rotors every time you get brakes serviced unless you race your car or possibly drive with one foot always on the brakes. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?
replace them when there about wore out, you need to have then checked at about 30,000 miles and then the mechanic will be able to tell you about how much longer you have before they need changed. How often are you supposed to change your brakes?

Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?

I am in the process of changing the brakes on my sisters car. I have experience doing this but I was wondering how do you know what to do with the rotors? I personally always change my rotors when changing the pads, but my sister only has enough money for the pads. I would buy them for her but I cannot afford it either.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
New pads will bed onto used rotors but only fully after a few hundred miles but the combination should be able to pass a rolling road brake efficiency test immediately, they just won't be %26quot;as good as new%26quot;. Done a fair bit of research into this as I had an argument with a mate who said new rotors weren't really necessary whereas I claimed they were.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
feel the rotors with your hands . if you feel grooves in the rotors, they should be replaced if not, they are good.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
I change my rotors when they warp. On the MR2, this is just about every time the pads give up.

On my camry, I change the rotors when they warp, which is about every third time I change the brake pads. Actually on my camry, I just press the brakes harder and it shuts them up.

If the rotors aren't warped, don't bother changing them.

Consider buying a boat. Not only will it give you an excuse to wear a fashionable ascot, but boat have no wheels, ergo, no rotors.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
If the rotors aren't severely rusted or scored up and the brakes didn't vibrate, you should be OK with just replacing the pads.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
You may be wasting money on rotors. unless they are warped, or grooved or worn where the pads hit beyond minimum thickness you can just put on new pads. Also, all rotors are not the same, the cheap chinese ones are only good for selling your car, US versions last a LOT longer and won't warp much.Brake Rotor replace, turn, or leave alone?
If the rotors are smooth and shiny they do not need replacing.

Minor grooving gets worse the deeper it goes.

Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?

Trying to change brakes on 86 Grande Prix. The front passenger wheel seems to be welded on to the rotor and we can't get it off. I read that aluminum will corrode when placed against steel, but knowing doesn't help get the wheel off. Does anyone know how to remove the wheel without destroying anything?Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
get underneath the car with a heavy hammer maybe small sledge hammer and beat it making sure to rotate the tire as you do it. also try to P.B blaster in a spray can. i have a dodge sport truck and had this same problem. just keep beating at it and eventually it will come off. after you get it apart put some anti-seize on any of the aluminium that may touch the rotor. hope this helps. or you can put a block of wood between the inside of the tire and the frame of the car, then start it and turn the wheel to use the power steering pump of your car as a press. once you have some pressure on the tire have someone hit the center of the tire to break it loose. do it in small steps. don't just reef on it. if this don't help you may email me goldwing_gurl@yahoo.comAluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
Sometimes you can give the edge of the tire a few kicks around the entire tire and it will pop off. But in really stubborn cases, I've taken a 7or 8 foot 2x4 and placed the end against the inside of the rim, then from the other side of the car, hit it firmly with a sledge hammer.... turning the wheel every couple of hits so you hit it around the whole wheel. If you turn the wheels a little, you can do it from just in front of the driver's front wheel. You might get a friend to help position the board while you hit it from the other side of the car. The reason for the long 2x4 is so YOU aren't under the car while it is jacked up, should it fall off the jack. And the wood won't gouge up the wheels. Hit as close to the rim as you can. After you get the wheel off, clean the back side up real well and get all the corrosion off. Then lightly coat the mounting surface of the wheel with Never Seize (it's a graphite laced grease type coating that will prevent rust and corrosion bonding the wheel to the brake rotor.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
Been there, done that, on an '88 Suburban. I've tried PB, propane torch, sledge-hammer, nothing worked! Except...

loosen the lug nuts, leaving about 1/4%26quot; between the nut and rim,

with the vehicle off the jack, try turning the steering wheel left to right and back and forth, if that don't work, drive SLOWLY forward and backward a few times, while turning the wheel left to right. If THAT still don't work....back up as far as you can, put it in gear, step on the gas and hit the biggest pothole you can find! THAT is what finally worked for me. When you hear a BANG!...STOP, jack it up and remove the wheel.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
p/b blaster is like wd40 only better.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
loosen the lug nuts but do not remove them, let the jack down slowly and the weight of the vehicle will dislodge the wheel. You may need to rotate the wheel a time or two and repeat.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
spray some pb blaster around where the wheel goes on the hub.(pb blaster is a lube and penitrating spray, it comes in a spray can, with a yellow lid, ask the parts guy), or take a big hammer and hit the inside of the tire outwards.(not the rim, just the tire)Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
If you have a stuck wheel, here's the easiest way to loosen it.

Loosen the lug nuts so they are maybe a thread loose. Get in the car and drive it a hundred feet or so down the street, doing the NASCAR tire warming move, zigzagging back and forth fairly hard. Drive back to the house doing the same thing. That should loosen it. It may take two times, but I've had 100% success doing it this way.

    jack up the car

    remove the front wheels

remove two bolts behind the calipers and hang them loose

remove screws on the rotor then wobble it out

and install in new oneI have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?
You'll need special brake tools, some big auto parts stores have free loaners.

You'll also need to turn the rotors and drums so there is no low or high spots. Some auto parts stores do this for free for buying the pads and shoes.

You'll need a micrometer to measure that there is enough metal on the rotors and brake drums. Again most auto parts stores can do this for free.

As for doing the brake job, I recommend buying the correct Chilton's manual for your car. It will give you step by step instructions and pictures. It will also give the correct minimum manufacturer specs to make sure the brakes will work correctly.I have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?
By %26quot;Changing the rotors%26quot; do you mean your doing a brake job? To convert to Rear discs is not hard,You only have to replace the upper and lower control arms and the spindle assy on both sides. Why bother?,The OEM Drum is a great unit when working properly.By Google surfing you will be able to find all the parts for a nice job.Good LuckI have a 1994 honda accord lx and im am wanting to change the rotors and i was wondering how?

    Cadillac Change Brake Pads light...?

I might be purchasing a 1999 STS tomorrow and this light is on.

He said he changed the brake pads (turned rotors also), you can clearly see they are new, from a local mechanic. He said the mechanic told him he has to go to the Cadillac dealership to get the light turned off.

If I do decide to buy it, how do I solve this problem?Cadillac Change Brake Pads light...?
This is a simple fix just bleed the brakes too reset the switch. try Google for procedures. good luck.Cadillac Change Brake Pads light...?

    Brake Rotors?

How often do brake rotors usually need to be changed? I got a 1996 bmw sedan and i changed the brake rotors maybe 8,000-10,000 miles ago and know the brakes are starting to make some noices again so I was hoping its just the pads not the rotors also.Brake Rotors?
The rotors won't typically make the noise by themselves.

The pads will wear a lot faster than most rotors. When you have a brake job done, they typically will replace the pads and measure the rotors to see if they are still within specifications. If they are, and can be machined, they will machine the rotors. Which basically makes the rotors smooth again to give the brakes a good surface to press against.

If you let the brake pads either %26quot;bite%26quot; into the rotors by going metal to metal or even some squeal plates make a gouge in the rotors they won't be able to machine them and you'll need to get them replaced.

If you are just starting to hear noise, go get the brakes inspected before they %26quot;bite%26quot; into the rotors too deeply.Brake Rotors?
Extremely helpful but wrong. Brake rotors can absolutely cause noise and on German cars the rotors wear at the same rate as the pads. That is how they are engineered. I've replaced thousands of german brakes, I know.

if it squeaks every 2 seconds its the padsBrake Rotors?
Its a BMW. As is typical of European design the pads and rotors are engineered to wear out at the same time.Brake Rotors?
Rotors are ok I would have the pads inspected see how much life is left to them if you need brake pads then they will resurface the rotors. If you have drum brakes in the rear have them or you perform a clean and adjust this will help extend the life of the front pads cause they wont have to work as hard. If you have disc brakes in the rear do the same as the front. Also all rotors have a measurement to them and where you get your work done should be taking measurements of your rotors before performing any work. I hope this info is helpful.Brake Rotors?
If you do not have a pulsating feel when you apply the brakes, it isn't the rotors.

Did you change the pads yourself?

Did you use brake grease on the caliper pins when you reinstalled them? This is an overlooked item. Not greasing those pins will cause the caliper to not float freely, the brakes will bind up and make your brakes squeal.

    Do you drive hard?

You may have overheated the brake pads and heat-cracked them.

The only way to check them is to take them off again and inspect the pads for heat stress cracks.Brake Rotors?
If you replaced them 10,000 miles ago they will not need to be changed.

Have the pad's changed and the rotors might have to be turned, which is where they put the rotors on a lathe and cut a clean straight surface on them. This can typically be done twice before they have to be replaced.

If when you put the brakes on the car shudders slightly this is an indication that they need turned. If there is any kind of audible noise it's most likely just the pads.Brake Rotors?
forget the other answers. The squealing is caused by %26quot;squealers%26quot;, they are attached to the brake pads and come into contact with the rotors when your brake pads become worn. Unless your steering wheel vibrates when you brake and the rotors are within a certain thickness, they should be fine.Have the pads changed by a Reputable shop, and if possible watch them do it as alot of places will rip you off.Brake Rotors?
Ever since Asbestos was outlawed for use in brake pads the industry has had to make more agressive friction material. These agressive brake pads grind the rotors at an advanced rate but 10,000 miles is too fast even for the new pads. You may need to change rotors everytime you redo the front brakes but they should last for 30,000 miles. Probably something else is making the noise but check the linings first just because it is the easiest thing to do. Then look to see if anything is gouging the rotor, and what it is. Check the wheel bearings too. If the caliper has frozen on one side it will have used up the other pad quickly. Do your home work. You will find it.Brake Rotors?
Get a micro meter and measure. Most BMW automotive books can tell you the acceptable thickness of the rotor. Generally, BMW rotors will last up 80K - 120K miles.

BMW cars have computer controlled pads wear sensors. They are located in Front Left wheel, and Rear Right wheel. So if it is a pads wear problem, your %26quot;brake lining%26quot; light would come on, telling you to replace the pads.

How do you change the brake pads and rotors on a 2003 chevy cavalier?

I know that i can go buy a book at an auto parts store but i was just hoping that someone here could give me step by step instructions on how to do it. I wont be doing it by myself. My boyfriend is a mechanic and he's going to be helping me, but i'd really prefer to not look like a complete idiot.

i'd really really appreciate whatever help you could give me.

and a slight secondary question: (i understand that i am being exceptionally sexist here but...) i assume most of the answerers of this question will be male, so how would you want your girlfriend to repay you for working on her car?How do you change the brake pads and rotors on a 2003 chevy cavalier?
simple...jack the car up, put jack stands under and remove jack. then take off the front wheels to expose the rotors and caliper. there should be 2 bolts behind the caliper that hold it onto the bracket. take the bottom one out and swivel the caliper up and tie it to the control arm with some wire. then the pads should be exposed and you can just take them out. take out and clean everything with brake cleaner and wire brush, but wear a dust mask because the dust can be carcinogenic. to get the rotors off, take the caliper bracket off..there will be 2 bolts on the back of it. remove both and it will come off easily. then there should be 2 screws that hold the rotor onto the hub. use an impact driver, you can buy it auto zone or maybe Lowe's..(its a heavy duty screw driver that you hit with a hammer on the end and it turns out screws that are really tight without stripping the head., costs like 10 bucks)..then take both screws out and the rotor should come right off...then put new rotor on or have your old one machined and put the screws back in with the impact driver..put the caliper bracket on, then then the brake pads, but put anti squeal compound on the back of them then put them on bracket, then swivel caliper down, lube the hardware, and put ant sieze compunt on the threads of the bolts, then torque to propper specs. next you should bleed your brakes..buthat'sts not 100necessary.How do you change the brake pads and rotors on a 2003 chevy cavalier?
