Trying to change brakes on 86 Grande Prix. The front passenger wheel seems to be welded on to the rotor and we can't get it off. I read that aluminum will corrode when placed against steel, but knowing doesn't help get the wheel off. get underneath the car with a heavy hammer maybe small sledge hammer and beat it making sure to rotate the tire as you do it. also try to P.B blaster in a spray can. i have a dodge sport truck and had this same problem. just keep beating at it and eventually it will come off. after you get it apart put some anti-seize on any of the aluminium that may touch the rotor. hope this helps. or you can put a block of wood between the inside of the tire and the frame of the car, then start it and turn the wheel to use the power steering pump of your car as a press. once you have some pressure on the tire have someone hit the center of the tire to break it loose. do it in small steps. don't just reef on it. if this don't help you may email me goldwing_gurl@yahoo.comAluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. Sometimes you can give the edge of the tire a few kicks around the entire tire and it will pop off. But in really stubborn cases, I've taken a 7or 8 foot 2x4 and placed the end against the inside of the rim, then from the other side of the car, hit it firmly with a sledge hammer.... turning the wheel every couple of hits so you hit it around the whole wheel. If you turn the wheels a little, you can do it from just in front of the driver's front wheel. You might get a friend to help position the board while you hit it from the other side of the car. The reason for the long 2x4 is so YOU aren't under the car while it is jacked up, should it fall off the jack. And the wood won't gouge up the wheels. Hit as close to the rim as you can. After you get the wheel off, clean the back side up real well and get all the corrosion off. Then lightly coat the mounting surface of the wheel with Never Seize (it's a graphite laced grease type coating that will prevent rust and corrosion bonding the wheel to the brake rotor.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. loosen the lug nuts, leaving about 1/4%26quot; between the nut and rim,
with the vehicle off the jack, try turning the steering wheel left to right and back and forth, if that don't work, drive SLOWLY forward and backward a few times, while turning the wheel left to right. If THAT still don't work....back up as far as you can, put it in gear, step on the gas and hit the biggest pothole you can find! THAT is what finally worked for me. loosen the lug nuts but do not remove them, let the jack down slowly and the weight of the vehicle will dislodge the wheel. You may need to rotate the wheel a time or two and repeat.Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. How do we get it off?
spray some pb blaster around where the wheel goes on the hub.(pb blaster is a lube and penitrating spray, it comes in a spray can, with a yellow lid, ask the parts guy), or take a big hammer and hit the inside of the tire outwards.(not the rim, just the tire)Aluminum wheel has fused to brake rotor. If you have a stuck wheel, here's the easiest way to loosen it.
Loosen the lug nuts so they are maybe a thread loose. Get in the car and drive it a hundred feet or so down the street, doing the NASCAR tire warming move, zigzagging back and forth fairly hard. Drive back to the house doing the same thing. That should loosen it. It may take two times, but I've had 100% success doing it this way.
